A St. Francis woman is facing federal prison after being indicted for a brutal assault involving a sharp metal object. Tiffany Spotted War Bonnet, 44, was charged with Assault With a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting In Serious Bodily Injury following an attack on March 4, 2019.
The federal grand jury returned the indictment on April 9, 2019. Spotted War Bonnet appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on May 7, 2019, where she formally pleaded not guilty to the charges. She was immediately remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial.
According to the indictment, Spotted War Bonnet assaulted an individual with the intent to do bodily harm, using a sharp metal object during the violent encounter. The attack caused serious bodily injury, triggering federal jurisdiction and the severe penalties now hanging over her.
If convicted, Spotted War Bonnet faces up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine. Additional penalties include 3 years of supervised release, a mandatory $100 payment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and possible restitution to the victim.
The investigation was led by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, highlighting the critical role tribal authorities play in federal prosecutions on reservation lands. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Elmore is prosecuting the case for the federal government.
The charges are presumed accusations under federal law. Tiffany Spotted War Bonnet is innocent until proven guilty. No trial date has been scheduled as of this report.
