A Newtown man has admitted to stealing nearly $3 million to fund his day trading activity, authorities said.
According to court documents, TIMOTHY MINGIONE, 33, of Newtown, pleaded guilty to one count of interstate transmission of stolen money on April 18, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford.
Mingione was accused of stealing from various business bank accounts he had access to by writing checks against the accounts or by wiring monies from the accounts to his personal trading account with TD Ameritrade.
Between April 2023 and September 2024, Mingione amassed more than $1 million in trading losses and stole nearly $3 million, authorities said.
Mingione has agreed to pay restitution of $2,958,203 and is currently released on a $40,000 bond pending sentencing. Judge Thompson scheduled sentencing for July 15.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher W. Schmeisser handling the case.
Mingione’s role involved assisting investors in the purchase of real estate and overseeing the properties, including addressing tenancy issues and reviewing property financials.
As part of his plea agreement, Mingione admitted to stealing from the various business bank accounts to fund his day trading activity, particularly in S&P 500 options.
