SCRANTON – A local man has pleaded guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from vending machines at the Tobyhanna Army Depot.
Timothy Scheitlin, 43, of Madison Township, Pennsylvania, entered a guilty plea before U.S. District Court Judge Malachy E. Mannion to one count of theft of government funds on January 31, 2019.
Scheitlin was employed at the Tobyhanna Army Depot from January 2014 until February 2017 and was responsible for collecting monies from vending machines. During his employment, Scheitlin stole over $1,000 from the vending machines.
The case was investigated by the Army Criminal Investigation Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenny P. Roberts is prosecuting the case.
A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. At the time of the sentencing hearing, the Court will determine the amount of loss to Tobyhanna Army Depot.
The maximum penalty under federal law for this offense is 10 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the Judge is also required to consider and weigh a number of factors, including the nature, circumstances and seriousness of the offense; the history and characteristics of the defendant; and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public and provide for the defendant’s educational, vocational and medical needs.
For these reasons, the statutory maximum penalty for the offense is not an accurate indicator of the potential sentence for a specific defendant.
