TOPEKA, KAN. – A brutal assault on Tribal land has landed a Topeka man in federal court. Wesley Reel Bennett, 23, was indicted by a federal grand jury this week, accused of seriously injuring a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
According to court documents unsealed today, Bennett allegedly committed the assault within the boundaries of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s territory in June 2025. The indictment charges him with one count of assaults within maritime and territorial jurisdiction – a federal charge carrying significant penalties if convicted. Details of the attack itself remain scarce, as the investigation is ongoing, but sources close to the case suggest the injuries were substantial.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) took the lead on the investigation, working in close coordination with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribal Police Department. The collaboration highlights the federal government’s commitment – and jurisdictional reach – when crimes occur on sovereign Tribal lands. The FBI’s involvement signals the seriousness with which authorities are treating this case, a clear message to anyone contemplating similar violence.
This isn’t the only case currently being prosecuted by the Topeka office of the U.S. Attorney. Hector Alvarado, 55, of Topeka, also faces federal charges – one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is handling that investigation. Further, Kenneth Norman Baker, 41, of Baxter Springs, is dealing with horrific charges: one count each of receipt, distribution, and possession of child pornography. The FBI is investigating Baker, and this case is a stark reminder of the darkest corners of the internet.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Hunting will be prosecuting both the Bennett and Alvarado cases, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart is assigned to the Baker case. While the details of each case differ dramatically, they all underscore the relentless work of federal law enforcement in Kansas to bring perpetrators to justice. The Grimy Times will continue to follow these cases as they move through the court system.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a conviction. Bennett, Alvarado, and Baker are all presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. However, the charges leveled against them paint a grim picture, and the victims deserve answers and, if warranted, justice. The Grimy Times will provide updates as this story develops.
