Grimy Times has uncovered a shocking case of embezzlement in New York, where a personal assistant to a wealthy victim has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for using the victim’s financial information to fund a luxury lifestyle.
According to court documents, Tracii Show Hutsona, 51, engaged in a confidence scheme between October 2015 and November 2019, embezzling over $1 million from her victim. The scheme involved using the victim’s financial information to open credit card accounts, make unauthorized purchases, and transfer funds to her own accounts.
The scheme came to light when the victim discovered significant expenditures from her financial accounts in September 2018. Hutsona confessed to using the victim’s financial accounts for her own personal use and apologized to the victim. However, she continued to use the victim’s financial accounts without permission, including through the use of a fake ‘power of attorney’ document.
During the scheme, Hutsona used the proceeds of her fraud to make payments to her concierge business and for personal expenses, such as mobile phones, restaurants, and nightclubs, luxury hotels, and jewelry. To cover the purchases, Hutsona transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars into the victim’s checking account and two 529 college savings accounts.
Hutsona’s scheme was uncovered when the victim reported fraudulent expenditures on her financial accounts to her bank. An investigation by the bank revealed that Hutsona had added herself as an additional account holder to at least two checking accounts and a savings account maintained by the victim and obtained multiple credit cards in her own name but drawn on accounts of the victim.
On February 15, 2023, Hutsona was sentenced to 51 months in prison for her role in the embezzlement scheme. The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman.
Hutsona’s case highlights the dangers of trusting individuals with access to one’s financial information. As U.S. Attorney Damian Williams noted, ‘Not long after serving a lengthy sentence for a previous federal conviction, Tracii Show Hutsona betrayed her employer’s trust by misusing her employer’s financial information to fund her own luxury lifestyle for years.’ Hutsona’s desire to live the high life at the expense of her victim has placed her back where she began — facing another substantial federal sentence.
