Travis Fender Sentenced to 171 Months for Double Shooting Drug Deal

Columbia, SC – A ruthless drug deal gone wrong has led to a severe sentence for Travis Donald Fender. The 26-year-old from Summerville was today sentenced by United States District Judge David C. Norton to one hundred and seventy-one months imprisonment for his heinous act of shooting two individuals during a drug transaction.

Fender, who had already been a convicted felon, pleaded guilty in January 2015 to one count of Discharge of a Firearm during a Drug Trafficking Offense and one Count of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Felon. The mandatory consecutive ten-year imprisonment sentence for the firearm discharge charge combined with the illegal possession charge’s maximum penalty of ten years resulted in the hefty sentence.

Details of the incident revealed that on June 2013, Fender participated in a drug transaction where he robbed and shot the two victims with a Glock 9mm handgun. Both individuals survived the ordeal, but not without severe injuries.

The sentence imposed by Judge Norton stems from an investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Nathan Williams prosecuted the case with vigor.

Fender’s actions have not gone unpunished, as his sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in violent drug-related activities. The community of South Carolina can take some measure of comfort in this stiff penalty for a crime that left two lives altered forever.
