Travis Sentenced to 12 Years for Armed Bank Robbery

CLEVELAND – Joel Alonte Travis, 21, has been handed a 12-year prison sentence after being convicted of robbing an ATM in South Euclid, Ohio, by terrorizing a service technician with a firearm. The brazen heist took place during broad daylight on Oct. 16, 2024.

Travis, who was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $112,440 in restitution, faced charges including armed bank robbery and using and carrying a firearm during the crime. U.S. District Judge Donald C. Nugent imposed the sentence on Aug. 14, 2023.

According to court documents, Travis and an accomplice ambushed a technician at a Chase Bank drive-thru ATM, demanding he remove cash-filled cassettes from the machine. The robbers made off with five cassettes containing approximately $112,440 in cash before fleeing the scene in their vehicle.

Travis was already on probation for an unrelated crime and under electronic monitoring at the time of the offense. Using location data and other information, investigators linked Travis to the crime and recovered three firearms from his apartment, including a pistol resembling the one seen in the bank’s surveillance footage. Photos of Travis holding large sums of money, posted on social media, further incriminated him.

The FBI Cleveland Division, Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office, Cleveland Heights Police Department, and South Euclid Police Department investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michelle M. Baeppler and Kristen Rolph for the Northern District of Ohio.
