PIERRE, SD – Tredell Long Crow, 27, of Ideal, South Dakota, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to five years for larceny and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence yesterday, April 24, 2024, in U.S. District Court. The case underscores the ongoing federal crackdown on violent crime and illegal gun possession, especially within Indian Country.
According to court documents, Long Crow’s troubles began in July 2023. He allegedly stole a vehicle from a residence in Sioux Falls, then drove it to Ideal, located on property within the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. The situation escalated quickly when, in the early hours of July 16th, Long Crow engaged in an argument with two individuals, ultimately brandishing and discharging a firearm.
The fact that Long Crow was even in possession of the weapon is a key element of the case. In 2022, he was convicted of Possession of a Controlled Drug or Substance in Minnehaha County, South Dakota. This prior conviction automatically disqualifies him from legally owning or possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law. The ATF, along with local law enforcement, built a solid case proving his illegal possession.
Federal prosecutors secured an indictment from a grand jury in September 2023, and Long Crow ultimately pleaded guilty on February 1, 2024. In addition to the five-year prison sentence, Judge Lange ordered Long Crow to serve three years of supervised release upon his release and pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He’s also been ordered to provide $1,786.66 in restitution to cover damages related to the stolen vehicle.
This case was pursued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office under the Major Crimes Act, which mandates federal prosecution of certain violent crimes occurring within Indian Country. The investigation involved a multi-agency effort, including the Sioux Falls Police Department, Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, Tripp County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson led the prosecution.
Long Crow was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service. The sentencing is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaborative law enforcement and community engagement. The program prioritizes fostering trust, supporting community organizations, and strategic enforcement, with a focus on measurable results.
