A 35-year-old man with a history of violent crimes has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for possessing a firearm in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
Troy Lee Mellott, a three-time convicted felon, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Danny C. Reeves for unlawfully possessing a .380 caliber semiautomatic pistol on December 10, 2012.
Mellott pawned the firearm at a local pawn shop and was subsequently charged with the offense.
He pleaded guilty to the charges in June 2013 and was classified as an armed career criminal due to his prior convictions.
Under federal law, Mellott must serve at least 85% of his prison sentence and will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for three years following the completion of his prison term.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hydee R. Hawkins and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney John Hayne.
Mellott’s sentence is a result of his classification as an armed career criminal, which carries a minimum statutory sentence of 15 years to life imprisonment.
The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon in Kentucky.
