Angelina L. Cedeno, Heroin Distribution, New York 2016

Angelina L. Cedeno, 35, of Troy, New York, admitted in federal court today that she distributed heroin in Albany County—a move that could land her behind bars for up to two decades.

Cedeno entered a guilty plea in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, copping to a single count of distributing the deadly opioid in the Town of Bethlehem during August 2016. The plea marks the collapse of any defense in a case built through a joint federal-state investigation.

The takedown was announced by United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Vadim D. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albany Field Office. Authorities have not disclosed the exact amount of heroin involved, but the charge carries a maximum 20-year federal prison sentence regardless.

Cedeno remains in custody as she awaits sentencing before United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino, scheduled for June 6, 2018. In addition to prison time, she faces a mandatory supervised release term of no less than three years—and potentially for the rest of her life.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York State Police, agencies that have intensified pressure on drug networks feeding the opioid crisis in upstate communities. Prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett.

Judge D’Agostino will weigh the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, the nature of the offense, and Cedeno’s criminal history—though the guilty plea may factor into the final judgment. The case underscores the federal government’s ongoing crackdown on heroin trafficking in the Capital Region.
