New York – An uproar has erupted in the Hudson Valley as local leaders denounce the Trump administration’s proposal to shut down the White Plains Social Security office, serving Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester Counties.
Attorney General Letitia James has led the charge, sending a stern letter to Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek of the Social Security Administration. The closure plan, which includes downsizing the Poughkeepsie field office, is met with fierce resistance from area representatives and senators.
‘Seniors and people who are disabled will have to travel much longer distances, at greater expense, to fight for their benefits,’ said U.S. Representative George Latimer. ‘It’s unacceptable to relocate clients to distant locations. Thank you to Attorney General James for leading on this issue.’
U.S. Representative Mike Lawler echoed the sentiment, expressing his outrage at the closure and vowing to work across party lines to prevent it from happening. Rep. Pat Ryan added, ‘The chaos of the Trump Administration is directly hurting our seniors. We need to act now and protect Social Security for everyone.’
Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins emphasized the importance of Social Security as a vital resource for many New Yorkers. ‘Closing the White Plains hearing office would create unnecessary barriers for my constituents, forcing them to travel farther and wait longer for support they need,’ she said.
Senator Nathalia Fernandez warned that if current policies are not reversed, more New Yorkers will be left without essential resources. ‘We cannot allow bureaucratic neglect to strip away Social Security access for our seniors and people with disabilities,’ she stated.
