Tucson Meth Mule McCormick Gets 10 Years

TUCSON, Ariz. – Jose Fernando McCormick, 52, is headed to federal prison for a decade after a brazen attempt to distribute eight kilograms of methamphetamine in broad daylight. U.S. District Court Judge Scott H. Rash handed down the 120-month sentence, followed by five years of supervised release, on June 27, 2025. McCormick previously pleaded guilty to Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, admitting his role in flooding the streets with the deadly drug.

The bust went down October 3, 2024, when McCormick rolled up to a Tucson gas station loaded with the illicit cargo in his truck. He wasn’t there to fill up, though. McCormick intended to connect with an associate and offload the 8 kilograms of meth, but the plan quickly unraveled when law enforcement moved in. Instead of cooperating, McCormick panicked and floored it, initiating a dangerous pursuit.

The chase didn’t last long. McCormick ditched the truck – still rolling – and bailed out, leaving the vehicle to slam into an electricity pole. It was a desperate attempt to escape, but officers swiftly located him hiding in a shed on a nearby residential property. The wreckage of his scheme, and his truck, were left as a stark warning to others.

This wasn’t a lone operation. The McCormick case was a key component of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, a multi-agency initiative designed to dismantle the highest-level criminal organizations threatening the nation. OCDETF focuses on intelligence-driven, prosecutor-led investigations to cripple the supply chains of dangerous narcotics.

The Drug Enforcement Administration spearheaded the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley Culver, District of Arizona, Tucson, securing the conviction and sentence. This case serves as a clear message: those who profit from poisoning our communities will face serious consequences. McCormick’s 10-year sentence is a testament to that.
