A 37-year-old Porterville man is facing federal prison after being indicted on multiple counts of methamphetamine trafficking following an investigation that uncovered a 7-pound distribution ring in Tulare County. Alejandro Cabrera-Gallegos was charged Thursday in a three-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Fresno.
The charges stem from two separate incidents in May 2019. On May 2, Cabrera distributed one pound of methamphetamine to an individual in Tulare County, according to court documents. Less than two weeks later, on May 14, he was arrested while attempting to distribute five pounds of the drug—this time, law enforcement caught him red-handed.
That same day, agents executed a search warrant at Cabrera’s residence in Porterville, where they seized an additional one pound of methamphetamine. The stash, hidden in plain sight, pushed the total haul to 7 pounds across multiple transactions, signaling what prosecutors call a calculated operation.
The investigation was conducted jointly by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Porterville Police Department, two forces that have ramped up efforts to dismantle regional drug networks. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kathleen Servatius and Katherine Schuh are leading the prosecution.
If convicted, Cabrera faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison, a maximum of life behind bars, and a $10 million fine. Sentencing would be determined by the court after weighing statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which assess everything from criminal history to drug quantity.
The charges against Alejandro Cabrera-Gallegos are allegations. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Trial proceedings are pending in the Eastern District of California.
