GRAFT INjustice: Tulare Man’s Lie Lands Him in Prison
FRESNO, Calif. – In a shocking turn of events, Rojelio Martin, 36, of Tulare, has been sentenced to two years and 11 months in prison for making false statements to his federal probation officer. The U.S. Attorney, McGregor W. Scott, announced the sentencing.
Martin was serving a supervised release after serving a 33-month prison sentence for a previous offense. A scheme that had defrauded 75 taxpayers out of their tax refunds earned him the original sentence, which also included a hefty $44,860 in restitution.
However, Martin failed to make court-ordered restitution payments, claiming health-related absences from work prevented him from paying up. To back up his claim, Martin presented his supervising U.S. Probation Officer with a forged letter from his doctor and a fake statement of earnings.
According to court documents, this wasn’t Martin’s first run-in with the law. His 2013 conviction was a result of a scheme that targeted 75 taxpayers, leaving them with no refunds. The IRS Criminal Investigation led the probe that ultimately landed Martin in hot water.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher D. Baker prosecuted the case, bringing Martin to justice for his dishonesty. The case serves as a reminder that lying to authorities will not get you off scot-free.
Rojelio Martin’s sentencing is a hard-hitting blow to those who think they can deceive the system. His 2 years and 11 months in prison will give him ample time to reflect on his actions. The people of Tulare can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served.
