Tulsa Man Lands 17 Years for Choking Pregnant Partner
A federal jury convicted Dakota Wayne Campus, 34, of domestic violence strangulation and firearm charges, and now he’s facing the consequences. U.S. District Judge John F. Heil, III, sentenced Campus to 204 months imprisonment, followed by 5 years of supervised release.
Campus was found guilty of Assault of an Intimate/Dating Partner by Strangling and Attempting to Strangle in Indian Country; Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in Indian Country; Carrying, Using, and Brandishing a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence; and Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition. The victim, a tribal citizen and pregnant woman, was the target of Campus’s violent outburst.
Studies show that domestic violence strangulation is a significant predictor of future attempted and completed murders, increasing the odds of death by more than seven times. Strangulation can leave victims with long-term psychological and physical injuries, including depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, traumatic brain injury, strokes, and more. Timely intervention is crucial to minimize the negative effects of strangulation.
The FBI and Tulsa Police Department conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stacey P. Todd and George Jiang prosecuted the case. Campus will remain in custody pending transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
