Tupelo Man, Kevin Kieckhefer, Faces 15 Years for Ammo Possession
MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Kevin Carter Kieckhefer, 35, of Tupelo, Oklahoma, is staring down a potential 15-year prison sentence after admitting to illegally possessing ammunition. Kieckhefer entered a guilty plea to one count of Felon in Possession of Ammunition, a charge that carries a hefty fine of up to $250,000.00, in federal court today.
The case, prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, stems from an incident on July 19, 2023. Authorities allege Kieckhefer knowingly possessed 25 rounds of .223 ammunition despite a prior felony conviction – a conviction for a crime punishable by more than a year behind bars, automatically disqualifying him from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition.
The investigation wasn’t a solo effort. The Coal County Sheriff’s Office, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) all contributed to building the case against Kieckhefer. Details of *how* authorities initially came to suspect Kieckhefer remain scarce, but the collaborative effort underscores the agencies’ commitment to keeping weapons out of the hands of convicted felons.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Gerald L. Jackson accepted the plea and has ordered a presentence investigation report – a thorough background check and assessment of the circumstances surrounding the crime. This report will be crucial when a U.S. District Court Judge ultimately decides Kieckhefer’s fate, factoring in federal sentencing guidelines and other relevant legal considerations.
Kieckhefer isn’t going home anytime soon. He’s currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, awaiting sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dak T. Cohen and Lewis M. Reagan are prosecuting the case, determined to see justice served and a significant penalty imposed for the illegal ammunition possession.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it progresses through the federal court system. The Eastern District of Oklahoma has seen a recent uptick in weapons-related offenses, and this prosecution signals a continued push by federal and local law enforcement to address the issue and enforce existing gun laws.
