A Casper, Wyoming man has been sentenced to 34 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Shawn Richard Flett, 38, pleaded guilty to the charge after an investigation by the Casper Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
According to court documents, the Casper Police Department was called to a domestic disturbance involving Flett on Oct. 2, 2024. During the investigation, law enforcement learned that Flett had a firearm hidden in his apartment, despite being a convicted felon and therefore prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Flett admitted that the firearm was given to him to settle a debt. He waived indictment and pleaded guilty to the indictment on April 15. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paige Hammer prosecuted the case, which was filed on Feb. 4.
The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Court Judge Scott W. Skavdahl in Casper on July 8. Flett will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term. The case is numbered 24-00062.
This sentence serves as a reminder that felons are not allowed to possess firearms, and those who do will face serious consequences. The Casper Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives worked together to investigate this crime and bring Flett to justice.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Wyoming will continue to prosecute cases involving firearm offenses, as well as other crimes that threaten the safety of the community. As this case demonstrates, the office is committed to holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring that justice is served.
In a statement, Assistant U.S. Attorney Paige Hammer said that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and the need to protect the public from individuals who pose a threat. The investigation and prosecution of this case are a testament to the collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Attorney's Office to combat crime in Wyoming.
