Jacksonville Felon Gets 18 Months for Packing Heat

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Terrence Jennings, 47, of Jacksonville, is headed to federal prison for 18 months after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. District Judge Wendy W. Berger handed down the sentence, solidifying another win for local and federal law enforcement battling the cycle of violence in the city.

The case unfolded on May 28, 2024, when Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) officers arrived at a residence to serve Jennings with a warrant for failure to pay child support. They found him snoozing on a couch. A rude awakening turned into a weapons bust when officers spotted a firearm tucked into Jennings’ waistband as they roused him. A loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol was quickly secured.

But the gun itself wasn’t the whole story. A check of Jennings’ rap sheet revealed a lengthy history of criminal activity. He’s previously been convicted of fleeing to elude a police officer, possessing cocaine, and – alarmingly – possessing a firearm *on school grounds*. Federal law is clear: a prior felony conviction strips a person of the right to own or possess a firearm. Jennings knew the rules, and broke them anyway.

Assistant United States Attorney Frank Talbot successfully prosecuted the case, built on evidence gathered by the JSO and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The collaborative effort underscores the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling gun violence. The feds aren’t messing around with repeat offenders.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through a coordinated approach involving law enforcement and community engagement. Launched in 2021, the Department’s violent crime reduction strategy focuses on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategic enforcement. It’s a multi-pronged attack on the roots of crime, but sometimes, a simple gun bust is a solid start.

Jennings’ 18-month sentence sends a message: Jacksonville won’t tolerate armed felons walking its streets. The Grimy Times will continue to track the fallout from this case and report on the ongoing efforts to keep Jacksonville safe – or at least, a little less grimy.
