Dazhan McCallister Charged with Illegal Machinegun Possession in Ohio

An Akron man has been charged with illegal possession of a machinegun and receipt or possession of an unregistered firearm, according to U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman.

Dazhan McCallister, 20, of Akron, was indicted by a federal grand jury sitting in Cleveland on two counts related to the possession of a firearm.

According to court documents, Akron police responded to complaints of a large group of people blocking traffic in a nearby park on July 28, 2020. When officers approached the group, they noticed McCallister carrying a firearm. The defendant was allegedly in possession of a Glock, Model 17, 9mm caliber pistol with an installed conversion device designed to allow the weapon to fire automatically, more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.

The firearm was not registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, as required by law.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. McCallister is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

If convicted, McCallister’s sentence will be determined by the Court after review of factors unique to this case, including the defendant’s prior criminal record, if any, the defendant’s role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation.

The investigation preceding the indictment was conducted by the Akron Police Department and the ATF. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Joyce.
