GREAT FALLS, MT – In a tough stance against gun crime, Emil Martin Lundstrom, a 59-year-old resident of Havre, has been sentenced to four years in prison for illegal possession of multiple firearms. The U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme announced the sentence today, which also includes three years of supervised release.
Lundstrom, who pleaded guilty to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm in May 2025, was already on probation after receiving a 20-year suspended sentence for eight counts of felony theft back in October 2017. His crime spree continued when he was caught with firearms despite his probationary restrictions.
The incident began when law enforcement responded to a business in Havre to remove Lundstrom due to employment termination linked to theft. During their removal, officers discovered bullet shell casings in Lundstrom’s work pickup truck, raising concerns about his possession of firearms. A thorough search led to the discovery of several rounds of 9mm ammunition and a cache of firearms at his residence and property.
In the house, under bed sheets, police found rifle barrels and stocks, while three firearms were discovered in the bedroom closet along with a safe containing cash. The camper contained an assortment of pistols, rifles, shotguns, and another .22 caliber pistol. Lundstrom’s garage yielded another rifle.
Lundstrom confessed during his interview that he knew he was prohibited from owning firearms due to his probation status. He admitted purchasing many guns before being placed on probation in 2017 and acquiring additional ones afterward through private parties since he couldn’t buy them from a federally licensed dealer (FFL). He also obtained hunting permits, knowing it would be 20 years before his probation ended.
The ATF, Hill County Sheriff’s Office, and Montana Probation and Parole collaborated on the investigation. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. For more information on PSN, visit Justice.gov/PSN.
