GREAT FALLS, MT – Nahun Esau Suazo-Varela, 48, is headed to federal prison after admitting to violating U.S. immigration laws. The Honduran national received a three-month sentence today, handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris, following a guilty plea entered in June 2025 for illegal reentry into the United States.
The bust went down May 22, 2025, in Havre, Montana, when law enforcement flagged a vehicle registered to someone who had overstayed their welcome. A traffic stop revealed Suazo-Varela as a passenger, presenting a Honduran passport but lacking any legal documentation permitting his presence in the U.S. He confessed to Border Patrol agents that he’d crossed the border illegally after being deported from McAllen, Texas, back in October 2010. This wasn’t his first rodeo with the system.
Court records show Suazo-Varela has a history with law enforcement, racking up numerous traffic-related offenses in Ohio between 2006 and 2010. These prior incidents ultimately led to a deportation order on September 30, 2010 – an order he blatantly disregarded by attempting to slip back into the country. The feds aren’t messing around with repeat offenders.
U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme’s office spearheaded the prosecution, with a solid investigation conducted by the United States Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The case isn’t being treated as an isolated incident, but as part of a larger crackdown on border security and illegal immigration.
This prosecution falls under the umbrella of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice. The operation aims to aggressively combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and shield communities from violent crime. It consolidates resources from both the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
While three months may not seem like a lengthy sentence, it sends a clear message: illegally reentering the United States after deportation carries consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to track federal prosecutions like this, exposing the underbelly of border crime and holding offenders accountable. The DOJ is clearly signaling a zero-tolerance approach to those who attempt to circumvent the law.
