GREAT FALLS, MT – The grim halls of justice once again echo with the sound of a foreign national’s sentence. Nahun Esau Suazo-Varela, 48, faced the stern judgment of Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris today, receiving a three-month prison term for illegal reentry into the United States.
In a case that began in Havre, Montana, on May 22, 2025, law enforcement confronted Suazo-Varela, who was riding as a passenger in a vehicle registered to an individual who had exceeded their admission terms. The Honduran national presented his passport and confessed to the lack of immigration documents necessary for legal residence.
Transported to the Havre Border Patrol Station, Suazo-Varela admitted crossing into the U.S. illegally after being deported near McAllen, Texas, in October 2010. His return was a stark reminder that despite the stern warning of deportation, some still defy the law.
Between 2006 and 2010, Suazo-Varela had accumulated numerous contacts with Ohio law enforcement for traffic-related infractions. He was formally ordered removed from the U.S. on September 30, 2010. Yet his illegal return to American soil underscored a persistent challenge in immigration enforcement.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted this case with vigor, and the investigation was led by the United States Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide effort that mobilizes the full might of the Department of Justice, Suazo-Varela’s sentence is another step towards reclaiming our borders and communities from illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations.
This operation, which synergizes efforts from various task forces including OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood, stands as a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to protect citizens from the violence and organized crime that can follow illegal immigration. For now, Nahun Esau Suazo-Varela will serve his sentence, reflecting the weight of his actions on American soil.
