Abraham Hernandez-Duron, Theft of Firearms from a Licensed Dealer, Utah 2025

PARK CITY, UTAH – A brazen early-morning break-in at the Park City Gun Club turned into a high-speed chase and SWAT standoff, culminating in the arrest of Abraham Hernandez-Duron, 40, a foreign national residing in the United States illegally. The incident, which unfolded on August 24, 2025, has sparked federal charges and exposed vulnerabilities in securing federally licensed firearms dealers.

According to court documents, alarms blared at approximately 5:30 a.m. signaling a forced entry at the gun club. Investigators allege Hernandez-Duron, of Taylorsville, Utah, used a hammer to smash his way inside. Almost immediately, shots rang out from within the business, ratcheting up the tension as local law enforcement converged on the scene.

The suspect didn’t wait to be confronted. He fled in a vehicle, triggering a police pursuit that ended when he crashed at Trailside Bike Park. Refusing to comply with initial commands, Hernandez-Duron prompted a full callout of a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. After a tense standoff, he was taken into custody without further incident. A search of the vehicle revealed five firearms – all confirmed stolen from the Park City Gun Club.

Hernandez-Duron has been charged with theft of firearms from a licensed dealer. He made his initial appearance on the felony information on September 24, 2025, before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in Salt Lake City. The details of his legal representation were not immediately available.

Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah announced the charges, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime. The investigation is being spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with Assistant United States Attorney Victoria K. McFarland handling the prosecution.

This case falls under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide DOJ initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. The operation integrates resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). It’s crucial to remember that a felony information represents an allegation, and Hernandez-Duron is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
