Joseph Anthony Harris, 51, of Lake City, pleaded guilty today to possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, federal prosecutors confirmed. The admission seals his fate in a case rooted in street-level drug dealing, a high-speed flight from law enforcement, and the violent potential of armed narcotics operations.
According to court documents, Harris sold cocaine to a confidential informant, triggering a multi-jurisdictional investigation. A search warrant was issued for his Lake City home. When officers arrived, Harris didn’t wait — he jumped in his vehicle and fled, sparking a chaotic car chase through residential streets. As patrol cars closed in, he hurled a bottle from his window — later confirmed to contain crack cocaine.
The chase ended in a screech of tires and slammed doors. Harris was taken into custody. Inside his home, federal and state agents uncovered more crack cocaine and a loaded .38 caliber handgun tucked inside the premises. The firearm, ready to fire, directly supports the federal charge that Harris used it in connection with drug trafficking — a charge that carries a minimum 5-year sentence, to run consecutively.
Harris now faces up to 20 years in federal prison on the drug count, followed by a mandatory minimum of 5 years — and up to life — on the firearm charge. No plea deal softens the blow; the sentence will reflect the seriousness with which federal courts treat armed drug offenders, especially those who flee from justice.
The case was jointly investigated by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Coolican is prosecuting. The collaboration underscores the broad net cast by law enforcement when guns and drugs intersect in Florida’s rural corridors.
This prosecution is part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” initiative, a targeted strategy to dismantle gun violence at the street level. U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III, and ATF Special Agent in Charge Daryl R. McCrary are leading the effort in the Middle District of Florida, pooling resources across federal, state, and local lines to hit dealers like Harris where it hurts — behind bars.
