LAKE CITY, FL – Samuel Franklin Crews, 32, of Lake City, has confessed to a sickening crime: receiving child pornography over the internet. The plea, entered today in Jacksonville federal court, carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison, and could extend up to twenty years. Crews has been rotting in federal custody since his arrest on December 31, 2013, and will remain there pending sentencing.
The investigation, spearheaded by an FBI agent in Jacksonville, began as an undercover operation targeting those sharing and accessing illegal images and videos of child abuse. The agent traced a computer in the Lake City area hosting child pornography via a peer-to-peer file sharing program. Several depraved videos were downloaded directly from that computer, leading investigators to Crews’s residence through information provided by the internet service provider.
On June 5, 2013, federal agents raided Crews’s home, seizing his computer. During questioning, Crews admitted to stumbling upon child pornography through a file sharing program and, disturbingly, becoming “curious.” He then actively searched for and downloaded more of the horrific material, even acknowledging the harm it inflicts on children. His admission is a chilling testament to the depravity at play.
A forensic analysis of Crews’s computer revealed a truly disturbing cache: 124 images and 10 videos depicting the sexual abuse of minor children. These aren’t just numbers; they represent countless moments of unimaginable suffering inflicted upon vulnerable victims. The details are too graphic to fully recount, but the evidence paints a clear picture of a predator seeking out and consuming this vile content.
This case was a collaborative effort, involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown is prosecuting the case, ensuring that Crews is held accountable for his actions. This isn’t just about one man; it’s about protecting children and sending a message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.
The prosecution of Samuel Crews is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. This project pools federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who prey on children, and to rescue the victims.
