A McAllen man has been slapped with a harsh prison sentence after being caught with a firearm, despite being a convicted felon.
Aurelio Perez-Aleman, 37, of Roma, Texas, was ordered to prison for possessing a firearm, announced United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson today.
Perez-Aleman pleaded guilty to the crime on May 30, 2013, and today, U.S. District Judge Randy Cane sentenced him to 100 months imprisonment to be followed by a three-year-term of supervised release.
The sentence was enhanced due to his prior violent felonies and the high-capacity magazine involved in the crime.
On September 7, 2013, Perez-Aleman was discovered in his vehicle near the Rio Grande River by Border Patrol agents after illegal aliens were spotted nearby.
After giving the agents consent to search his vehicle, a WASR 10, 7.62 mm rifle was discovered inside, which was a prohibited item for a convicted felon.
Perez-Aleman had two prior felony convictions for possession of marijuana, as well as aggravated robbery and assault on a public servant.
The investigation revealed that Perez-Aleman had been waiting for an individual to cross the Rio Grande River so he could give him the firearm.
Aurelio Perez-Aleman has been in custody and will remain there pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Border Patrol, with the case being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Steven Schammel.
