Rampant Gun Violence in Indianapolis: Tyrell Cage’s 40-Year Sentence Marks a Turning Point in the Ongoing Crisis
INDIANAPOLIS- Tyrell Cage, 29, of Indianapolis, has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for a string of eight armed robberies and two shootings that terrorized the city in 2021.
Cage, a convicted felon, pleaded guilty to eight counts of interference with commerce by robbery, four counts of brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was also ordered to pay $2,668 in restitution and be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for three years following his release from federal prison.
The crimes, which took place over the course of one month, left a trail of destruction in their wake. Cage’s modus operandi was to point a black handgun at employees and demand cash from the registers. On multiple occasions, he threatened to shoot employees if they did not comply with his demands.
During one attempted robbery, Cage fired three shots at an employee who refused to hand over cash. In another incident, he critically wounded a gas station employee with a gunshot wound to the stomach. In addition to the physical harm, Cage’s actions left countless employees and business owners traumatized and fearful for their safety.
“These defendants engaged in an armed spree of violence and intimidation, critically wounding an innocent person and terrorizing many more,” said Zachary A. Myers, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. “The lengthy federal prison sentences imposed here demonstrate that these grave offenses carry grave consequences.”
Cage’s accomplice, Jayla Deane, 36, of Indianapolis, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for two counts of interference with commerce by robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. Deane was also ordered to pay $1,030 in restitution and be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for three years following her release from federal prison.
The investigation, led by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), resulted in the recovery of a black Taurus G2 9mm semiautomatic handgun used in the robberies, as well as clothing, shoes, hats, and jewelry worn by Cage and Deane during each of the robberies. The suspects were arrested on June 1, 2021, at the InTown Suites Hotel on West 85th Street, bringing an end to the reign of terror orchestrated by Cage and Deane.
