Tyrell Thompson Sentenced to Over 9 Years for Gun & Drug Smuggling in MD

Greenbelt, MD – In a grim turn of justice, 24-year-old Tyrell Lamont Thompson, also known as ‘Freak,’ has been sentenced to 110 months in federal prison for his involvement in a drug and firearm smuggling operation in Prince George’s County. The sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Roger W. Titus on February 3, 2017.

The charges against Thompson included possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence also includes three years of supervised release following his prison term.

Thompson’s downfall came as the result of a joint investigation by the ATF, DEA, and the Prince George’s County Police Department, which targeted armed drug dealers operating within the county. The sentencing hearing marked the culmination of this intensive effort to crack down on criminal activity in the area.

According to his plea agreement, law enforcement officers executed a federal search warrant at Thompson’s residence in Forestville. They recovered a loaded 357 magnum revolver with an obliterated serial number, a loaded 9mm semiautomatic pistol equipped with a laser sight and an extended magazine, and a bag containing several smaller baggies and chunks of crack cocaine intended for distribution.

Thompson’s previous felony conviction rendered him prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. The sentence announced by United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein was a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in dangerous drug and firearm activities.

Rosenstein commended the ATF, DEA, and the Prince George’s County Police Department for their hard work in the investigation and expressed his gratitude to the Metropolitan Police Department, Maryland National Capital Park Police, and U.S. Marshals Service for their assistance. He also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael T. Packard and Thomas M. Sullivan for their efforts in prosecuting this Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force case.
