ALBUQUERQUE – A shocking incident of violence has shaken a community in New Mexico, with a 10-year prison sentence handed down to a 38-year-old man from Shiprock.
Tyrell Willie, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon, assault resulting in serious bodily injury, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, according to court documents.
The disturbing case began on May 28, 2023, when Willie contacted Jane Doe via Facebook Messenger and requested to visit her at her home. However, things took a dark turn when Willie arrived at Jane Doe’s residence at approximately 2:00 a.m. and became aggressive, attempting to forcibly remove her from her vehicle.
A brief conversation ensued, but it quickly escalated, with Willie leaving the scene only to return later. When Jane Doe’s son, a brave young man, intervened to protect his mother, Willie fled once more. But he was waiting in the shadows, and with the headlights off, he drove up to the young man and discharged two rounds from the driver’s seat, striking him in the stomach.
Thankfully, Navajo Nation Police officers were already in the area responding to reports of erratic driving and quickly pursued and apprehended Willie.
Now, Willie faces a daunting 10 years behind bars, with no parole in the federal system. Upon his release from prison, he will be subject to five years of supervised release.
This is a stark reminder of the dangers of violence and the importance of community vigilance. We must come together to support those affected by such crimes and work towards creating a safer, more just society for all.
