SCRANTON – Tyrik Brown, a 29-year-old inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill, in Minersville, Pennsylvania, has been caught with a dangerous prison-made weapon.
According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, Brown admitted to possessing a ‘shank,’ a prison-made weapon, during an incident in April 2023 at FCI Schuylkill.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service, with Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara prosecuting the case.
Brown, formerly of Washington D.C., pleaded guilty on January 24, 2024, before U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani to the charge of possession of contraband in prison.
The maximum penalty under federal law is five years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Brown’s guilty plea is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to maintain order and safety within the federal prison system.
