Arkansas-based Tyson Foods Inc. has been hit with a $500,000 fine for willfully violating worker safety regulations, resulting in the tragic death of an employee at its River Valley Animal Foods plant.
The incident occurred when maintenance worker Jason Kelley was exposed to toxic hydrogen sulfide gas during a repair, leading to his untimely demise.
Despite being aware of the risk, Tyson failed to implement proper controls or protective equipment for employees working near the hydrolyzers at the plant. This disregard led to the death of Kelley and injuries to several others involved in the rescue effort.
Ronald J. Tenpas, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, emphasized the importance of abiding by safety regulations, stating that companies ignoring these laws will face prosecution.
