U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite Announces Events in Honor of National Reentry Week

New Orleans, LA – In a brazen attempt to distract from the failures of his administration’s reentry program, U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite announced a series of events to coincide with National Reentry Week.
According to a press release issued by Polite’s office, the events are designed to highlight the successes of his administration’s reentry program, which has been plagued by criticism and controversy.
The first event, scheduled for Monday, April 25, 2016, will feature Polite and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Lourdes Castro Ramirez of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) at Educare of New Orleans, located at 3801 St. Bernard Avenue.
On Wednesday, April 27, 2016, Polite will visit the Pollock Federal Correctional Complex to discuss the challenges faced by inmates upon release. He will be joined by Lilia Valdez-Lindsley of the Veterans Administration and Hakim Kashif, a former federal inmate who has successfully returned to the New Orleans community as a college student and criminal justice advocate.
However, critics argue that Polite’s efforts are too little, too late, and that the administration’s reentry program has failed to make a meaningful impact on reducing recidivism rates.
The Obama Administration has taken major steps to make our criminal justice system fairer, more efficient, and more effective at reducing recidivism and helping formerly incarcerated individuals contribute to their communities. An important part of that commitment is preparing those who have paid their debt to society for substantive opportunities beyond the prison gates, and addressing obstacles to successful reentry that too many returning citizens encounter.
