Grimy Times has analyzed the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program data for Vermont in 2021. The state reported relatively stable crime rates, bucking the national trend of rising crime during that period.
FBI UCR data shows that Vermont experienced a 1.8% increase in reported crimes from 2020 to 2021. This growth, however, was modest compared to the nationwide surge. The U.S. saw a 4.6% rise in reported crimes during the same period, according to the FBI.
Property crimes made up the bulk of reported incidents in Vermont, with 4,434 burglaries and 2,331 motor vehicle thefts reported in 2021. While these numbers are concerning, they represent a continuation of a long-standing trend. The state’s low population density and strong economy contribute to its relatively low crime rates.
Violent crimes in Vermont also showed a mixed picture in 2021. The state reported 133 forcible rapes, a 15.4% decrease from 2020. However, aggravated assaults rose by 10.5% during the same period, with 844 incidents reported.
As the nation grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, rising tensions, and social unrest, Vermont’s crime rates held relatively steady. The state’s low crime rates can be attributed to various factors, including its strong law enforcement presence, community engagement, and economic prosperity. These factors have contributed to Vermont’s reputation as one of the safest states in the country.
