Vermont Man Indicted for Selling His Father’s Stolen Guns

Burlington, Vermont – Peter Baez, a 41-year-old Northfield resident, has been charged with federal crimes for the unlawful possession and sale of stolen firearms that belonged to his late father. The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont announced on July 10, 2025, that a federal grand jury returned an indictment against Baez.

Baez entered a plea of not guilty during an arraignment held on August 7, 2025, before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle. The judge ordered Baez’s release on conditions pending trial.

The charges stem from the illegal sale of firearms that were originally owned by Pedro Baez, who passed away suddenly in 2024. Despite knowing the terms of his father’s will, which left all property to his daughter, Peter Baez retained possession of the firearms and sold some to local gun stores, keeping the proceeds.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, an indictment contains only allegations and that Baez is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment. The actual sentence would be determined by the District Court with guidance from the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines and statutory sentencing factors.

Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) in the investigation. He also thanked the Berlin and Montpelier Police Departments for their assistance.

Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt is prosecuting the case, while Peter Baez is represented by William Vasiliou, II, Esq.
