Veronica Valenzuela Sentenced for Meth Trafficking in NM

VERBATIM: In a grim milestone for Luna County’s drug war, 41-year-old Columbus resident Veronica Valenzuela was sentenced today to 156 months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release. The sentence, handed down in Las Cruces, N.M., comes after Valenzuela’s conviction on federal methamphetamine trafficking charges.

Valenzuela, who was arrested in February 2015, faced charges related to a meth trafficking conspiracy spanning from October 9, 2014, to December 12, 2014. According to the criminal complaint, she and others sold significant quantities of meth to undercover Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents on multiple occasions.

Valenzuela’s guilty plea on April 24, 2016, revealed her direct involvement in the distribution of over 104 grams of methamphetamine on November 4, 2014, and an additional 231.05 grams on December 11, 2014. Her conspiracy to traffic the drug was a stark testament to the region’s ongoing battle against meth.

The Deming office of HSI led the investigation into Valenzuela’s activities, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Luis A. Martinez prosecuted the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Las Cruces Branch Office. The sentence sends a clear message that trafficking in this dangerous substance will not be tolerated in New Mexico.

Valenzuela’s conviction and sentencing underscore the federal government’s commitment to cracking down on drug traffickers across the nation, especially those who profit from the sale of methamphetamine, which has devastating effects on communities and individuals alike.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the harsh penalties faced by those caught in the grip of drug trafficking. As New Mexico grapples with its meth crisis, the sentence handed down today is a victory for justice and a warning to would-be traffickers that their actions will not go unpunished.
