Victor Antinio Burks, Mail Theft, Florida 2015

Victor Antinio Burks, 28, and Yamil Sanchez, 33, have been brought to justice for stealing mail from a U.S. Postal Service contract facility in Jacksonville, Florida.

According to court documents, the duo worked at a Jacksonville mail distribution facility operated by a contractor for the U.S. Postal Service. Between March and November 2014, Burks stole numerous items from the mail, including 7 televisions, a tablet computer, 15-20 cellphones, 20-25 purses, and a videogame console.

Burks admitted to agents that he had pawned the televisions and the tablet, and sold the rest of the items, estimating that he had made about $2,500 to $3,000.

Sanchez stole items from the mail for about two years, ending in the summer of 2014. He admitted that he had stolen a laptop computer, a compound bow, and a set of golf clubs, all of which he pawned. Sanchez also admitted to stealing a television that he later sold at a flea market.

U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan sentenced Burks to 79 days’ imprisonment, to be followed by two years of supervised release and 100 hours of community service. Sanchez was sentenced to two years’ probation, a $500 fine, and 100 hours of community service.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Arnold B. Corsmeier.

The investigation revealed that Burks and Sanchez took advantage of their positions to steal valuable items from the mail, causing a significant loss to the U.S. Postal Service and its customers.

The court’s sentencing of Burks and Sanchez sends a strong message that mail theft will not be tolerated and that those who commit such crimes will face the consequences.
