Victor Craighead, a local resident, met his untimely demise on March 28, 2026, at the hands of New York State Police (NYSP) troopers in the town of Diana, Lewis County.
The fateful encounter unfolded on the evening of March 27, 2026, when NYSP troopers responded to a 911 call from the area of a mobile home on Alpine Road in Diana. The investigation revealed that Mr. Craighead, after emerging from the mobile home, brandished a long gun and discharged it at the troopers, who were positioned in an armored vehicle.
In a split second, one of the troopers retaliated by firing his service weapon, striking Mr. Craighead. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and a long gun was recovered by officers.
As per New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is mandated to assess every incident where a police officer or a peace officer may have caused the death of a person, regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty, or the decedent was armed or unarmed.
Following OSI’s assessment, which indicates that an officer may have caused Mr. Craighead’s death, the agency has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident. These preliminary facts are subject to change as more information becomes available.
As the investigation unfolds, the Grimy Times will continue to provide updates on this developing story. The OSI’s findings will be scrutinized to determine whether the actions of the NYSP troopers were justified and whether any wrongdoing occurred.
