Fentanyl Tampering Case Rocks Des Moines
A shocking case of fentanyl tampering has come to light in Des Moines, Iowa, with a former pharmacy technician pleading guilty to illegally manipulating the highly potent painkiller.
Victor Van Cleave, 29, a former employee of Iowa Methodist Hospital, admitted to tampering with fentanyl between September 7, 2016, and October 2, 2016. During this time, Van Cleave had access to the Schedule II controlled substance, which was stored at the hospital for administration to patients.
According to the plea agreement, Van Cleave used a syringe to replace the fentanyl with another solution, injecting the drug into himself while using a different syringe to dispose of the original fentanyl. The tampered vials were then placed back into storage at the hospital.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Office of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley D. Price is prosecuting the case, with U.S. Attorney Marc Krickbaum announcing the guilty plea.
Van Cleave is scheduled to be sentenced on July 10, 2018, at 1:30 pm before Chief United States District Judge John A. Jarvey. The severity of the sentence remains to be seen, given the gravity of the crime.
The fentanyl tampering case has sent shockwaves through the medical community in Des Moines, with many left wondering how such a brazen crime could have gone undetected for so long.
As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the consequences of fentanyl tampering can be deadly, and those responsible will be held accountable.
