Virginia Man Indicted in 2017 D.C. Police Ramming

A Virginia man is facing a federal indictment in connection with a violent 2017 attack in which he allegedly used a pickup truck to deliberately plow into three public workers in Northwest Washington, D.C. Brandon Figures-Mormon, 24, of Disputanta, Virginia, was charged with multiple felonies after a grand jury returned an indictment accusing him of attempting to kill two Metropolitan Police officers and a city transit worker.

Figures-Mormon was charged in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia with three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, three counts of aggravated assault while armed, two counts of felony assault on a police officer while armed, and related charges. He remains in custody and is scheduled to be arraigned on February 16, 2018. If convicted, he could face up to 90 years behind bars.

The attack unfolded shortly before 9 p.m. on June 8, 2017, on the 2300 block of 18th Street NW, near the intersection with Belmont Road. Prosecutors say Figures-Mormon entered a white Dodge Ram pickup truck and sped up the median on 18th Street NW toward Columbia Road, driving directly at the victims, who were working in the roadway. The impact left all three with serious injuries.

After mowing down the workers, Figures-Mormon allegedly fled through the Columbia Road intersection and barreled onto Adams Mill Road NW, where he crashed into a parked sanitation truck. Officers found him still in the driver’s seat and arrested him at the scene. The victims were rushed to local hospitals and survived the assault.

U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu and MPD Chief Peter Newsham publicly condemned the attack, calling it a targeted act of violence against public servants. They praised detectives from the MPD’s Major Case/Cold Case Unit for their relentless work in building the case. Support from Computer Forensic Examiner John Marsh, Victim/Witness Advocate James Brennan, and Paralegal Specialist Tiffany Fogle was also acknowledged.

The prosecution is being led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Natasha Smalky and John B. Timmer, with assistance from Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Kerkhoff. The Justice Department reminds the public that an indictment is not a conviction—Brandon Figures-Mormon is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
