Volleyball Predator Barrs Gets 33 Years

MINNEAPOLIS – Dorian Christopher Barrs, 33, will spend the next 400 months – 33 years – behind bars for the systematic sexual abuse of more than a dozen young girls, a federal judge declared yesterday. Barrs, a former volleyball coach at Maple Grove High School and within various club programs, used his position of authority to groom, exploit, and abuse vulnerable players, some as young as 14. The sentence comes after a disturbing investigation revealing a decade-long pattern of predation.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson didn’t mince words, calling Barrs’ actions a “deliberated and calculated abuse of power.” He connected the case to a disturbing trend in Minnesota, highlighting a series of recent convictions involving individuals in positions of trust – coaches, state troopers, daycare workers, even elected officials – preying on children. “This is the ultimate betrayal of power,” Thompson stated. “And it demands the full force of federal prosecution. We will not slow down. If you harm a child while holding a position of trust, we will find you, expose you, and bring you to justice.”

Court documents detail a chilling scheme. Barrs didn’t just abuse his players during training; he actively sought them out through social media, meticulously building relationships with the sole intention of sexual gratification. The coach frequently used the identity of another minor to “catfish” his victims, eroding their defenses and gaining their trust. Hundreds of messages reveal a rapid escalation towards sexualized topics, demonstrating Barrs’ manipulative control. The abuse extended beyond emotional manipulation; Barrs produced and distributed sexually explicit images and videos, and engaged in sexual acts with at least five of his victims.

Investigators have identified at least 19 minor victims in total, 14 of whom were actively being coached by Barrs at the time of the abuse. The case began to unravel in 2024 when one courageous survivor confided in her parents and contacted law enforcement. This single act of bravery triggered a cascade of disclosures, allowing authorities to fully expose the scope of Barrs’ depravity. The U.S. Attorney’s Office specifically commended the victims for their courage, stating their strength protected other girls from experiencing the same trauma.

U.S. District Judge Nancy E. Brasel, in delivering the 400-month sentence followed by a lifetime of supervised release, described the case as “every parent’s nightmare.” She emphasized the egregious breach of trust, noting that Barrs exploited not only the victims but also their families. “Sometimes sports are the only lifeline for a child with a bad situation at home,” Judge Brasel observed, “which is ironic because the defendant knows how important sports were in his own life, so it’s even more unfathomable what he did in this case.”

FBI Minneapolis Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. hailed the sentence as a “stern warning” to potential predators. “Dorian Barrs egregiously abused his position of trust for over a decade,” Winston stated. “The FBI remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting children within our communities.” The collaborative effort between federal and local authorities was crucial in building the case and securing the conviction, ensuring that Barrs will be held accountable for his monstrous crimes. The investigation remains open, and authorities are urging anyone with information about similar abuse to come forward.
