A Wakpala woman is facing federal charges for allegedly committing a violent crime.
Adrienne Kills Small, 35, was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 5, 2013, for Assault With a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, according to the United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine or both, and a period of supervised release of 3 years on each count.
Kills Small appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on February 7, 2013, and pled not guilty to the indictment.
The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley is prosecuting the case.
Kills Small was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not been set.
The charge is merely an accusation, and Kills Small is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The case is a disturbing reminder of the violence that can occur in our communities.
