December 19, 1947 – In the midst of a brewing controversy, Henry A. Wallace, former Vice President of the United States, found himself at the center of a labor storm. Forty-five prominent trade union officials from New York City, representing a staggering 263,000 workers, publicly called upon Wallace to throw his hat into the ring for the 1948 presidential election. Their impassioned plea, however, was met with a resounding rejection by Walter P. Reuther, the stalwart president of the CIO United Auto Workers.
