In a shocking display of brutality, 43-year-old Walter Lamar Jackson has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for assaulting his cellmate at the Federal Correctional Complex Coleman in Sumter County, Florida.
According to testimony and evidence presented at trial, Jackson was an inmate at the facility on July 15, 2021, when he attacked his cellmate in the special housing unit. The assault resulted in severe injuries to the victim, who was left unconscious on the floor.
CORRECTIONAL officers responded to an emergency alarm and immediately restrained Jackson in handcuffs. The officers later discovered that Jackson had been slamming his cellmate’s head into the concrete floor. Medical personnel treated the victim for his injuries.
Assistant United States Attorneys Hannah Nowalk and William S. Hamilton prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Senior United States District Judge John Antoon II handed down the six-year sentence to Jackson, who was found guilty by a federal jury on January 30, 2024.
The motive behind the assault was reportedly that Jackson had given his cellmate three warnings to be quiet.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of violence within federal prisons, where inmates are often subjected to brutal assaults by their fellow prisoners.
