Walter Oil & Gas Corporation, Failing to Notify of Hazardous Waste Spill, Louisiana 2014

Crime Scene: Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico

A Texas-based oil company, Walter Oil & Gas Corporation, is facing serious charges for its role in a devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. According to a Bill of Information filed in the Eastern District of Louisiana, the company failed to immediately notify the proper authorities of a hazardous waste spill on March 31, 2014.

As reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the spill occurred at an offshore facility operated by Walter Oil & Gas Corporation, which resulted in the discharge of hazardous substances into navigable waters. The company’s failure to notify the authorities of the spill is a felony violation of Title 33, United States Code, Section 1321(b)(5)(C).

The charges against Walter Oil & Gas Corporation were made public by U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite, who emphasized that the Bill of Information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendants must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri is leading the prosecution of the case. The Criminal Investigation Division of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) are also involved in the investigation.

The case highlights the importance of environmental regulations and the need for companies to take responsibility for their actions. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what the outcome will be for Walter Oil & Gas Corporation.
