ANCHORAGE, AK – Adam David Seymour, 37, of Washington state, is facing federal charges after a chaotic scene unfolded aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 49 from Seattle to Anchorage on April 5th. Seymour allegedly attacked a female passenger with the intent to commit abusive sexual contact, and also assaulted two male passengers, forcing the flight crew to restrain him for the duration of the flight.
According to court documents obtained by Grimy Times, the crew intervened when Seymour began harassing the female passenger, escalating to a physical assault. The complaint details a disturbing attempt to make unwanted sexual contact. After the initial attack, Seymour allegedly turned on two male passengers who attempted to intervene, resulting in further physical altercations. The pilots considered diverting the flight, but ultimately continued to Anchorage with Seymour secured in a jump seat.
A federal grand jury indicted Seymour on April 19th on one count of assault with intent to commit abusive sexual contact and two counts of simple assault – all occurring within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States. The intent to commit sexual assault charge carries a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Each of the assault charges carries a maximum sentence of 6 months. If convicted on all counts, Seymour could face over a decade behind bars.
The FBI is leading the investigation, and federal prosecutors, Ainsley McNerney, are handling the case. Sources close to the investigation reveal that the female passenger sustained minor injuries, and is receiving support services. The two male passengers also reported minor injuries, but refused medical attention at the time of the incident. The feds are building a case based on witness testimony from passengers and crew, as well as security footage from the aircraft.
Seymour’s arrest is the latest in a string of in-flight incidents highlighting the increasing challenges faced by airline staff dealing with unruly passengers. While many incidents involve alcohol or disputes over masks, this case represents a far more serious and predatory crime. The special aircraft jurisdiction allows federal prosecutors to pursue these crimes as if they occurred on federal land.
Seymour is currently being held pending trial. He has been appointed a public defender. As with all criminal cases, Seymour is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. Those with information related to the incident are urged to contact the FBI’s Anchorage field office.
