Wasilla Felon Sentenced for Gun Possession

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – A Wasilla man has been handed a 21-month federal prison sentence for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Brandon Paul Schatz, 41, brought a loaded Glock Model 42 to his job at a local gravel pit while on felony probation for Assault in the Third Degree.

U.S. District Judge Sharon L. Gleason imposed the sentence after noting that Schatz’s criminal history, including previous convictions for weapons offenses and driving under the influence, warranted strict punishment for public safety. The judge emphasized that his possession of firearms is strictly prohibited due to his prior record.

On May 23, 2016, Schatz brought the firearm to work at the gravel pit in Wasilla, a violation of his probation terms. Acting U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder praised the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Alaska State Troopers for their work in investigating and bringing this case to trial.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Gleason cited Schatz’s repeated violations of the law and his failure to follow the conditions of his probation as reasons for her decision. She highlighted the potential danger posed by individuals like Schatz having access to firearms.

The sentence includes three years of supervised release following the prison term. The successful prosecution of this case is a testament to the commitment of federal and state law enforcement agencies in ensuring public safety and holding felons accountable for their actions.

Acting U.S. Attorney Schroder commended all involved parties for their efforts, stating, “The protection of our communities from individuals who pose a risk with firearms remains a top priority.”
