Waterloo Chef Guilty of Illegal Alien Harbor

Waterloo’s Yu Jiang has struck a deal with the feds, admitting to harboring undocumented aliens through his Hibachi Sushi Buffet. The 30-year-old restaurateur faces up to a decade behind bars for the heinous conspiracy charge.

Jiang and his crew, according to court documents, employed foreign nationals without legal status at their restaurant from 2011 to 2012. These workers were given shelter by the establishment, shuttled daily to their makeshift home, and paid under the table for their labor.

The scheme was a cash-only operation, with meals served free of charge, making it clear that Jiang knew full well what he was doing. The Chinese citizen’s future is now in doubt, as he could also face deportation after serving his sentence.

Jiang is looking at a maximum penalty of 10 years in the clink, a quarter-million dollar fine, and three years of supervised release. Sentencing will be determined following a pre-sentence investigation report.

Assistant United States Attorney Richard L. Murphy is handling the prosecution, with Department of Homeland Security Investigations leading the investigation. The case file can be accessed at this link, under case number 13-CR-02017.

Jiang was released on bond pending his sentencing, which will come after a thorough review of his behavior and circumstances. This case serves as a stark reminder that the law applies to all, regardless of the scale of operations or influence.
