Wentworth, SD — In a stunning turn of events, 29-year-old Jordan Charles Opdahl has been charged with the heinous crime of Receipt and Distribution of Child Pornography. According to Acting United States Attorney Dennis R. Holmes, a federal grand jury has indicted the South Dakota man for his alleged activities.
Opdahl, who was indicted on November 9, 2021, faced U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on November 24, where he entered a not guilty plea to the serious charges against him.
The potential consequences are severe. If convicted, Opdahl could be sentenced to up to 20 years in federal prison and face a fine of $250,000. In addition, he may be required to serve life on supervised release and contribute $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution could also be ordered.
The indictment outlines that on or about October 20, 2020, Opdahl knowingly received and distributed child pornography that was transported across state lines or internationally. This charge is a serious violation of federal law, as it involves the interstate or foreign commerce of such material.
As this is merely an accusation, Opdahl is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation into this case has been a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations, the Madison Police Department, and the Division of Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper is handling the prosecution.
For now, Opdahl remains free on bond while awaiting trial. A specific trial date has yet to be announced.
