Wesley Sorrow, Bank Robbery, Georgia 2024

Wesley Sorrow didn’t waste time returning to crime. Just seven days after walking out of federal prison for a previous bank robbery, the 50-year-old Lizella, Georgia, resident walked into American Pride Bank on Forsyth Road in Macon and demanded cash from a teller—kicking off a federal case that ended in swift conviction.

A federal jury found Sorrow guilty of bank robbery following a three-day trial that began Nov. 15 in Macon. Prosecutors proved he handed a note to the teller, grabbed the cash, and returned to the halfway house where he was supposed to be reintegrating into society. That same day, FBI agents and deputies from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office moved in, recovering stolen money from his locker.

Sorrow now faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is set for Feb. 1 before U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning Sorrow will serve every mandated day behind bars if the maximum is imposed.

According to court records, Sorrow was serving out the tail end of his sentence at a halfway house after being convicted in June 2009 for robbing a bank in the Middle District of Georgia. That prior conviction didn’t deter him. On May 21, 2019, he walked into American Pride Bank and executed the same playbook—only this time, the FBI was waiting.

“Being in federal prison was apparently not enough of a punishment for Sorrow to learn his lesson because within a week of being released he went right back to his criminal tendencies,” said Chris Macrae, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Atlanta Field Office. “Thanks to the assistance of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, he will receive more time in federal prison where he will be off the streets and unable to terrorize our community.”

Sorrow’s criminal history includes multiple convictions for bank robbery, robbery, and forgery—stretching back nearly three decades. “Wesley Sorrow is yet another criminal who will soon learn the certain and lengthy penalties for violating federal level crimes,” said Bibb County Sheriff David Davis. “We can hope the penalty for this conviction will effectively end his 30-year crime career.” The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joy Odom and Robert McCullers.
