West Bridgewater Man Pleads Guilty to Tax Fraud

Federal Court, Boston – In a shocking case of tax evasion, 51-year-old Keith Eaton, a resident of West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty to one count of filing a false individual income tax return. According to Acting Assistant Attorney General Caroline D. Ciraolo of the Tax Division, Eaton’s guilty plea was accepted by U.S. District Court Judge William Young for the District of Massachusetts.

Court documents reveal that Eaton, a former employee of a heating and air conditioning company in Brockton, Massachusetts, failed to file federal individual income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for the years 1998 through 2003. The IRS subsequently assessed Eaton with a staggering $280,000 in taxes, interest and penalties for the years 1998 through 2001.

Despite receiving Forms 1099 reporting significant earnings, Eaton did not file timely individual income tax returns with the IRS for years 2004 through 2008. In a desperate attempt to avoid paying his dues, Eaton began operating Eaton Mechanical LLC, a heating and air conditioning business, and used the cash from the business bank account to pay his personal expenses, including his mortgage.

Eaton’s scheme was eventually uncovered by the IRS-Criminal Investigation, who investigated the case and revealed that he failed to file individual income tax returns for the years 2009 through 2012. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Eaton is required to pay restitution for his unpaid tax liabilities for the years 1998 through 2012.

Eaton faces a statutory maximum sentence of three years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. U.S. District Court Judge William Young has scheduled Eaton’s sentencing for September 14. Acting Assistant Attorney General Ciraolo commended the special agents of IRS-Criminal Investigation who investigated the case and Trial Attorneys Brittney Campbell and Kenneth Vert of the Tax Division, who are prosecuting the case.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of tax evasion and the importance of transparency in financial dealings. As the nation continues to grapple with the complexities of tax laws, Eaton’s case highlights the need for individuals to take responsibility for their financial obligations.
